Someone handed me a copy of Windows Vista RC1. Yep, you’ve
heard it right - I am now in possession of an EVALUATION COPY of Windows Vista. I hope Microsoft would not be over-exaggerated here… I’m just testing their product.
Anyway, Based from my testing (as a simple user of Windows), I find Vista an exaggeration compared to XP. Sure, the nice
‘Vista-look’ interface: the 3D-look bars, the Windows Sidebar, the revamped UI
of Windows Media Player - definitely caught my attention, but the overall
functionality of the OS is still very much XP.
Kudos to Microsoft honchos, I uninstalled Windows Vista RC1 to give way to
Ubuntu Linux Edgy Eft (6.10), so don’t worry, I’m not using it - as of now. For
those of you out there longing to get their hands on Windows Vista, it’s worth
the wait. You can still cherish the moments you have with your XP. With
hardware requirements in the highest level, you wouldn’t expect your current
hardware configuration to beat the 1.0 Windows Experience base score mark (as
in the case of my PC). If you already have Dual-core processor, 1-2GB RAM,
256MB DDR PCIE Video card, 5.1 Sound card (oh, heck, speaking of soundcard,
Vista is such a pain in the ass in finding a suitable driver for my soundcard),
and a DVDRW or DVD Combo drive, then you’re off to a good start using Vista and
its enhanced interface called Aero. But for me, I’d rather stick to XP than
join the hype.
I might as well wait the so-called MAC OS for PC’s. I don’t know but I only
heard it from the grapevine. But it a sure thing to watch.
The battle of the OS maybe far from over. But I think Vista
is way more superficial than its counterparts (Linux, MAC, XP hehe).
Who knows? Maybe when Vista will be officially launched in February 3 (?) we
will then be able to find out how powerful and different Vista
is - from a mediocre’s perspective.
Screenshots to follow - Unless Microsoft tries to intervene.
